Foot & Mouth Update - 20 September 2007

The Finance and General Purpose Committee met by telephone conference on 19 th September to discuss the general situation with reference to the current FMD outbreak. While David Raine, in his capacity as NSA Chairman, was able to update the committee on the latest news, it was not possible at this stage to say when livestock market sales could commence.

  • Regional Chairmen reported on their local Auctions – the Kelso Ram Sales will not be rescheduled, nor will the Blackmoorgate Sale. The committee sanctioned Blackmoorgate vendors moving entries to the Hereford Sale, the closing date for which has been extended until the 26th September. Vendors will be written to.

  • Hexham and Northern Marts will hold a photo sale on Monday 24th September for sheep entered with them for the Kelso Sale.

  • It was reported that many members are selling sheep privately.

  • The website is offering Association members the facility to advertise sheep for sale at £30 per page, including space for up to 4 photographs.

  • The transfer of entries between other Sales centres will be discussed when final sales dates have been re-scheduled. The Association is committed to flexibility on this matter to the benefit of its membership.

  • With the exception of Hereford, the catalogues have now all been printed and sent to the auctioneers, although Penrith and Carlisle are still in the final stages of publication. (Printing was halted for a few days, until the FMD situation became clearer.)

  • Standstill times will cause major problems for buyers and vendors.

  • Another meeting of this Committee has been arranged for Tuesday 25th September by which time Defra will have made further announcements and the Association can review the situation in conjunction with the Auctioneers.

  • A letter will go out from the Association to all members as soon as Sales Dates have been rescheduled.
