There was only one talking point at the Builth sale this year, when a Leicester shearling smashed the centre record for any breed at this massive sale.
The price was ten thousand guineas more than the previous record for a Charollais nearly ten years ago and eclipsed the day's other top prices. It was also more than sixteen thousand guineas up on last year's top Bluefaced Leicester price! The ram was sold by Dewi Williams of Bryn Dansi, Dolwen, Abergele to the nearby village of Llanddulas where Jackie McCleod had 'fallen in love' with him at the Royal Welsh Show.
He is by the X3 Craig - Yr Orsedd Elite Plus and out of a ewe by R24 Hazelwood. And won first prize in the shearling class.
A clearly delighted Jackie McLeod of Nanty y Glyd, Llanddulas, Abergele, put in some determined bidding against fierce competition from Northumberland to win her Bluefaced Leicester. She had coveted the ram since being asked to look after him on the breed stand at the Royal Welsh Show.
There was a strongish demand for well made shearlings, but there was less demand for lambs, which saw only around a 50% clearance rate, in a sale which grossed well over £100,000. Another notable price on the day came from the same flock as Z11 Elian by the same sire and out of a ewe by W1 the Close, sold for 1750gns to TE & GA Hughes. The same buyer also took another shearling from the Elian flock by the Y12 Rosehill for 880gns.
Top price in the lamb section went to Elfyn Owen, who saw his first prize lamb, and res champion at the Progeny show earlier in the summer, take a 1450gns bid from R Shaw, Locko Grange for his A2 Cernyw lamb, by a homebred tup, Y1 Cernyw, which was the champion at the Welshpool progeny show earlier this year.
M Roberts, Myfrian, had a bid of 850gns for his A15 Myfyrian tup lamb. The lamb, by X41 Clennell and out of a ewe by W2 Mossard, sold to RP Williams, The Down.
The days champion, judged by F Johnson, West Shipley came from Dewi Jones, Pigot with Y19 Myfyrian Elite + , and sold for 750gns to EM Morgan.
