Strong bidding saw averages rise in both the shearling and lamb classes by over £100 for a slightly less reduced number forward. There were some eye catching sheep at the sale but the star of the show was certainly the pre-show champion from M Roberts, Myfyrian, with his tup lamb. Judged by John Stott and Alex Bisset, who placed it as his champion at the Progeny show last month, the lamb, a son of the Y1 Cernwy E+ reference sire and out of a daughter of the T4 Carry House E+, stood out as a clear winner, oozing style and class. It had also taken champion at the Anglesey show where it caught the eye of the judge there, Alan Clarke from Mosser Mains who backed up his judgement and rang in to bid, eventually landing his tup for 4800 gns.
The second top price on the day was a personal best for regular seller, Jackie McLeod, when she sold her Wanstead C4 lamb, a son of the 17,000 gns Elian Y8 and full brother to last years Royal Show champion, it has had a successful show season itself, taking first at Denbigh and Flint show as well as picking up a second at the Progeny show earlier in the summer out of a Shrewbridge sired ewe. It travelled south to the Lower Down flock for 1500 gns.
Another son of the Reference sire, Y1 Cernwy E+, from E Owen sold for 1450 gns to Innovis Breeding. This strong, powerful shearling, out of a Scrainwood ewe had taken 1 st prize in his class at this year's Royal Welsh show, and then went on to take the Res Male champion at the same show.
The Burndale flock from Derek Henderson was making its first appearance at the sale and it again followed up its good trade at Kelso with another four figure tup when they sold their lamb C3 Burndale for 1250 gns. He is out of an 11 year old ewe, which has previously won the Yorkshire show and won her class at this year's Northumberland show, showing class never fails! This cracking lamb with a great skin is by the N25 Nithsdale and goes back to Shafthill Sparkie. After travelling all the way south, it headed back north to near neighbour, Alex Bisset. A third lamb out of the same ewe is heading to the Carlisle sale next month.
On the whole, trade was strong and the auctioneers very happy with the trade. Once again it was easy to see that conformation was king, with good strong tups with correct feet and clean skins were keen to sell.
Averages; 432 Bluefaced Leicester shearlings £613.50, 102 Bluefaced Leicester ram lambs £478.88.
