Tup Lamb Class

Junior Handlers
Junior Handlers taking part at
Penrith

A big turnout at the Penrith Show
saw some great classes judged
by R Carter and M Roberts, who
had to decide winners from some
very strong classes, such as the
ram lamb class which had 14 entries
forward, in which R Archer & Son
eventually took first and second
with lambs sired by different rams.
The first place being sired by the
Thornton Le Dale, and the other by the
days Male Champion and Reserve
overall, Cocklaw T1, which is shared
with M C Robinson. Reserve Male
Champion was from M & C Drummond
with a Teviot Shearling purchased
at Castle Douglas last year.

In the female section all eyes were on the Yorkshire Supreme Champion, Cocklaw Sparky, by the Pennine L1 and she didn't disappoint, holding on to her title from the previous year, and then going on one step further in the Interbreed Championship, judged by Hawes auctioneer, John Cloughton, and took the supreme title. This title added to a growing array of championships won by this tremendous 4 crop ewe, including
the supreme Highland Champion
2004 as well as numerous breed and interbreed championships at other
shows. It was a good day for the
Robinson family as their T1 tup,
shared with R Archer & Son also
took the male title, making it a
top 1 - 2 for the family, and
more success was to follow in
the progeny classes, as the
Robinsons claimed the overall
progeny title too, with a group of 3
ewes by the same sire, all sired by
the L1 Pennine, which is proving to
be a great, consistent breeder.
Pipped at the post in the progeny
classes was Glenn Shapiro and
her Hazelwood flock. They had
beaten off some
strong competition
and won all the other progeny
classes, 3 ram lambs by same
sire, 3 gimmer lambs by same
sire and 3 gimmer shearlings
by same sire, all amazingly
were sired by the same ram,
Barlaes T5, a 3 shear which
Glen bought for £1600 out of
Castle Douglas as a lamb, and is
leaving some great stock sheep
and setting a standard for the
flock to follow.

Champion Mule Group
Three mule lambs sired by Howgill
Grange W1

In the Mule progeny ring, last years record price ram was setting tongues wagging as Alan Barnes swept all before him with lambs sired by the Howgill Grange W1 £23,000 ram. These smart, sharp coloured lambs took the first two places in the single class, and won the pairs class too, before going on to win best Mule lambs by one sire. Wayne Hutchinson.

'Guess the weight of the ram' competition - Phil Davies of the
Gornal flock had kindly supplied the tup and two gimmers for the
stand exhibition, and had also offered a prize of a ewe lamb for the
winner of the competition. Nearly £200 pounds was raised and this
will go to Leukeamia Research. It certainly created a bit of interest
in the stand. The weight of the Ram was 161.5 kg and the first correct
entry out of the hat was Miss Mari Owen from North Wales.
