At the annual Bluefaced Leicester Sheep Breeders'Association Progeny Show at Penrith, entries were well over 100. This year's judges were Robin Thomson from the Ewanston flock and Herbert Hutchinson, Whitehouse flock.
Taking the breed champion ticket in the individual section was Matt & Connell Drummond, Cassington flock, Ayrshire with a gimmer shearling (Cassington Zoie) by a homebred sire (Cassington Z1) and out of ewe by Knockairdie Blue Diamond. She was also first in her class at this year's Ayr Show. The reserve champion was again from M/s Drummond with a two crop ewe by a Teviot Elite plus sire and out of Cassington Shona N44 who herself won 21 championships in her lifetime. The reserve champion is a half sister to the 2006 Royal Highland Show champion.
Male Champion was from Stephen Crozier, Watersyke flock, Lockerbie with an aged ram (Z1) bred by D Brown, Tundergarth flock bought at Castle Douglas for £1050 in 2007. He was sired by Drumhumphry X1 who was champion at Castle Douglas in 2006. Z1 went on to be classified Elite Plus at this year's show. Reserve Male Champion was from M/s Drummond with a shearling ram purchased last year from David & Jane Cruikshank, Nithsdale flock, Castle Douglas. He is sired by Nithsdale General and out a ewe sired by Barlaes Bouncer. This shearling ram was placed second in his class at this year's Highland Show. He was also classified Elite at the show.
The champion in the progeny group section came from M/s Drummond with three well grown, sharp gimmer shearlings by Broomhills Crazy Frog purchased in Hexham in 2004. This Broomhills sire has been very successful in the Cassington flock and has produced some tremendous progeny. Reserve in the Progeny section was three ram lambs from Martyn Archer, Carry House flock, Hexham sired by a Heddon Valley sire. All three ram lambs were ET brothers to his top priced lamb at Hexham last year.
The Mule section is always strongly competed and this year was no exception. Winning the champion individual was Gordon Rawsthorne, Scargill Farm, Carnforth with a ewe lamb by a home bred sire by Keer T6. In reserve was R & F Wilson, Carrholme, Carlisle with a ewe sired by a Barley sire. She was champion at Skelton and a member of the Champion pair at this year's Great Yorkshire Show.
In the Mule progeny section, M/s J T & J James, Midtodhills, Carlisle came out on top with three gimmer lambs with their sire Todhills Z6. He was by Todhills V10 who was the sire of the champion mule progeny group in 2007 at Penrith Show. In reserve place was Martyn Archer with three gimmer lambs by Breck House Z1 who is sired by Kirkby Redgate X1. Breck House Z1 is the sire of all of Martyn's show lambs this year.
