There was once again a great show of Bluefaced Leicester's at Antrim, with some very keenly contested classes which saw judge Alex Brown tested to the best of his abilities. Enjoying a great day out were Graham and Julie Loughery from the Temain flock, taking the Overall Champion with a gimmer lamb by Y1 Orravale, which was by X1 Riddings, and out of a ewe by a Macqueston tup. From a flock of just 10 ewes started three years a go with ewes from Ewanston and Firth flocks is making big waves in Northern Ireland, recently taking both the Champion and Reserve at the Omagh Show. The gimmer lamb took a step up at Antrim, though, after it was Reserve at Omagh.
The Reserve Champion also came from the gimmer lamb class and shared similar breeding, sired by the prolific Y1 Orravale, which is also sire to "Magners" which is going down a storm in Scotland at the moment. The gimmer lamb from Michelle Wright, Mullaghwee, is out of a Ewanston ewe bought at the dispersal sale a couple of years ago. The Wrights also made it a hat trick in the Mule progeny section, claiming a third championship with lambs sired by last years £2000 purchase "Baby" Glenane, which has similar breeding to Magners and was bought at the Masserene sale last year.
In the progeny section Alistair Christie, The Fields, took a step up from last year when he took the Reserve in the progeny section. This year he took the Championship, with the same sire, Ty-Gwn Z3, winning the title with three gimmer shearlings by him and also winning with his three gimmer lambs too.
J Blaney took the Reserve in the progeny section with three tup lambs by an Orravale tup bought privately last back end. He was by a £3200 Midlock and out of a ewe by Controversy.
