The Bluefaced Leicester Association held their annual Progeny Show at Penrith Show again this year, an event that has established a reputation for being the place to be seen showing both Bluefaced Leicester’s and their progeny the Mule. It attracts exhibiters and spectators from all over the UK
Champion and Reserve in Leicester section was from Michael James, Duhonw flock, Builth Wells, Wales. The Champion was a homebred ram Duhonw B1 who was sired by Duhonw R3 and out of a ewe by Tygwyn P1. The Reserve Champion was a gimmer by Old Hemley A5 and out of a ewe by Castle Bolton P22. She is a full sister to the ram lamb that was 1st Prize in his class. Reserve male was M & C Drummond, Cassington, Maybole with Cassington “Cocky Lad”, a home bred shearling ram by Myfyrian Blue Dragon Elite Plus and out of a ewe by Broomhills “Crazy Frog”. Reserve female was from J & D Stenton, St.Ravenscar flock with a ewe by Todhills Z1 and out of a ewe by Hundith Z4. She was interbreed champion at Kilnsey Show in 2010
In Leicester progeny section, Champion and Reserve groups were both from north of the border. M & C Drummond were Champion with three sharp gimmers sired by Myfyrian Blue Dragon Elite Plus. Matt bought this tup at Builth Wells in 2009 where he was pre-sale Champion. He was first in his class at the Highland on his only other show outing this year. Taking the Reserve progeny group was Jimmy Bell’s, Cottage Flock, Whelphill, Biggar with three ewe lambs shown with their sire Lunesdale C7. He was sired by Star Green M1 and bought at Bentham for £3000 last year.
In the Mule section the Champions in the individual and progeny classes both came from John Smith-Jackson, Shafthill flock, Haltwhistle. They were all sired by Shafthill C2 a homebred son of the renowned crossing sire Hundith Z4. Reserve in the Mule progeny section was Michael James, Duhonw flock with three Welsh Mules with their sire, Old Hemley A5, who is by Midlock Y1. Old Hemley A5 had the Champion Mule Progeny at Penrith in 2010. Reserve in the individual Mule section was R & F Wilson, Carrholme, Carlisle with a gimmer shearling purchased from John Smith-Jackson, Shafthill, sired by Shafthill Z21. |
