The Welsh Bluefaced Leicester Progeny Show and ram classification was held at Welshpool market. The entry there was the biggest seen at this event and the quality of the sheep on show was as good as seen anywhere in the UK this year. The man with the mammoth task of judging it was Matt Drummond of the Cassington flock in Ayrshire. Taking the individual championship was a sharp ewe lamb from M. C. Roberts, Myfyrian flock, Anglesey. She was sired by homebred tup Myfyrian C1, champion at this event last year and sold at Builth Wells for 4800 gns. Mervyn retained a half share in him with the other half going to Alan Clarke, Mossermains flock. Myfyrian C1 with three outstanding ewe lambs including the individual champion also won the progeny show championship. Taking the reserve individual championship was E. Owen, Cernyw Flock with a shearling ram bought from F. Johnston, Ashes flock at Carlisle last year. He was champion at the Royal Welsh this year and was sired by a Craig Yr Orsedd sire. Taking the reserve progeny championship was Michael James, Duhonw flock with three strong tup lambs with their sire Halkswell A5 “Elite Plus”. This well proven stock ram was sired by Kirkby Redgate Y1 and was out of a ewe by Lunesdale T1.
For the first time there were two performance recorded classes this year. M. C. Roberts, Myfyrian flock won the tup lamb class, both how the lamb looked and its index were taken into consideration in this class. The winning lamb was a very cocky, correct tup and had the second highest index recorded in the breed this year of 207, he also has great crossing lines being sired by Nunscleugh C1 a Tanhouse B4 son. A class for recorded ram and ewe lamb to be shown with their sire was won by Aled Jones, Craig Yr Orsedd flock with a great group of sheep. The sire was his striking stock tup Arkleby B1 Elite Plus, the tup lamb is his No 1 this year at Builth Wells and has an index of 161.
Judging the Mules was the highly respected Mule and Bluefaced Leicester James Porter, Riddings flock, Yorkshire. Winning the individual championship was E. Owen, Cernyw Flock with a white faced Mule by a home bred tup Cernyw C15 sired by Hazelwood X18 and out of a ewe by the renowned Cernyw Y1. The Cernyw flock also won the reserve Mule progeny championship with three ewe lambs by the same Cernyw C15 sire.
