Sheep of a high health status are in demand by flockmasters throughout Great Britain. No farmer can afford the losses of abortion and weakly lambs born.

HISHA (Highlands & Islands Sheep Health Association) was established over 20 years ago by farmers with the aim of promoting high health status throughout the industry in this most scenic part of Scotland. The breeding ewes are tested for enzootic abortion and flocks achieve accredited status after 2 clear annual tests. Vaccine use is not permitted in the flocks. Testing is done by SAC Premium Sheep and Goat Health Scheme (PSGHS).

Enzootic abortion is a major cause of abortion causing severe financial losses and can affect up to 25% of the flock. Infected sheep seldom show clinical signs until they abort in final stages of pregnancy. The disease can have adverse health implications on humans and pregnant women are especially at risk.

The main sale is at Dingwall on September 14 th where 95% of the sheep are out of Blackface or Blackface x Swaledale ewes, all, of course, by the Bluefaced Leicester sire. All sheep at this sale are from EAE accredited flocks.

Not only are they EAE accredited all the breeding females forward at the sale are on the Heptavac P system, they are scab dipped and the ewe lambs are dosed with a long lasting wormer within two to three weeks of the sale.
