Judging at the Welsh Progeny
Show

A scorching summers day greeted all at the annual Welshpool Progeny show, as well as some hot classes for judge, John Mounsey from the Walton flock, Carlisle to oversee, which provided a good spread of the honours.

Taking the overall purebred championship was Mervyn Roberts of the Myfyrian flock with 3 cracking gimmer shearlings by the Carryhouse T4 sire, which was bought in Hexham 2002. Placed reserve Overall was a group of 3 Ram Lambs, from Aled Jones, Craig yr Orsedd, shown with their sire, Cocklaw T4, who was bought at Kelso from M C Robinson in 2003. All three of these exceptional lambs will be heading to the sales at Builth Wells later in the back end.

In the Mule section top honours went to P D Williams with 3 welsh mules, out of Beulah Speckled Faced ewes and sired by a Gelli bred ram, with the reserve champion going to the winner of class 7, two mule gimmers shown with their sire, where seven lots were forward to be judged, Ken Jones of the Lawson flock, winning with a pair of smart lambs by the Tymanr W2 ram.

Four rams took Elite Plus status, being selected because of their outstanding breed characteristics, and these attributes being shown in their progeny.

Reference Sire - Cannington W44

The search was also on for a reference sire and Cannington W44 was selected on his outstanding confirmation and size. The ram by Firth R38 had a muscle scan of 32%, the highest in the breed. Semen from this ram can be used by other members of the Sire Reference Scheme, and will also be made available for other members of the society.
